finding beauty in the middle of the mess

Meet Amy

Welcome!

I’m Amy, wife to Jason, a marketer of medical products who also happens to be a former minister. We’ve made our acquaintance with the joys and challenges of full-time ministry and know it’s a hard job. My two lively, creative, thoughtful boys keep me on my toes. Somehow we all survived 8 years of staying home together 24 hours a day. My oldest is enjoying junior high (how is that possible?), and my youngest is now in 4th grade. It seems like yesterday I was picking Cheerios up off of the floor.

For 9 years, before my duties as a mom, I taught at the elementary school I attended as a child. My fourth grade teacher mentored me my first year. Teaching is such a taxing yet rewarding job!  I have a special place in my heart for teachers of any kind.

While I was teaching, I got my master’s degree in library science. I excitedly discovered I was carrying our first child the day before I received a job offer as a school media specialist. As a result, the dream of running a library did not to come to fruition, but sometimes God has bigger dreams for us.

I spent many years afraid of relationships with women, but motherhood forced me to reach out for sheer survival. Some of my greatest joys have been experienced with a group of women, once known as Roof-Crashers (based on the teaching from the book of Luke about the man paralyzed from birth) that I helped lead and teach at my childhood church. I have learned so much about love, life, and leadership with these precious ladies. This fall I am now working part-time as the coordinator of a moms’ ministry at my church known as mom2mom. These ladies aren’t quite as far along in the motherhood journey as I am now, and they are keeping me young at heart (and making me grateful I don’t have toddlers anymore)!

Last year I self-published my first book, One Mom Can Change the World, with my dear friend and mentor Claudia Mitchell. I strongly believe in the power of story to motivate and encourage. Hopefully, you will find yourself in my writing, nod your head, and think, “Me, too.”

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks to Gift of Today Photography for the great photos!

Some posts to help you learn about me, or simply some of my favorites.

A little about how cancer has affected our family.

My silliest post, but oh so true. If you struggle making good food choices, this one is for you.

One of my most popular posts. Truth with a twist.

A post I feel truly passionate about. Such beautiful people represented here.

A potentially life-saving post about our youngest son. One of my most difficult experiences.

Are you an introvert, too? You might relate to this post.

My journey toward better health: how I learned just because someone isn’t overweight doesn’t mean they’re healthy.

A post that hardly anyone read, but it shows my heart.

  1. That would be green tea (cherry), I think. Nice to meet you!

  2. Hey Amy! Love your blog! Hope you’re finding blogging a rewarding experience! Also, your photo in your page header is super cute!!

    • Thanks for stopping by, Maggie! It’s always so fun to read about all you are doing in L.A. Trying to go the direction of your dreams is never easy, but usually rewarding! Best wishes.

  3. Hi Amy,

I found your blog listed on Jeff Goins’ 500 Words writing challenge. I was drawn to the title; it’s a phrase that my spiritual mentor used to encourage me whenever I was letting myself get stressed. Trust God in the middle of the mess. It was very good advice.

I also wanted to encourage you as you embark on writing 500 words a day this month. May it be a productive and insightful experience for you.

    Blessings,
    Ann
